Ahh, Back to School! There’s a crisp fall breeze in the air, new school duds are purchased, overpriced backpacks are packed (because all 2 year olds need backpacks, right?!) and lazy summer mornings are a thing of the past. Need the antidote to those busy autumn mornings? Enter Cascadian Farm cereals; aka your breakfast BFF.

Cereal is one of those things I could eat almost any time of day, and truth be told, I sometimes eat it for dinner after a busy day of cooking at home or in the test kitchen, but today we’re here to talk about hacks to make your morning bowl of cereal more exciting and nutritious!

Step 1) Buy Cascadian Farm! Not only is it delicious, but by choosing this brand you are playing a part in their mission to support farmers who use practices that regenerate the land and their communities. How’s that for being productive before your 1st cup of coffee?

Step 2) Store a measuring cup inside the box for little hands. It makes it easy for them to serve themselves. Plus, I’m guilty of nearly dumping the entire box into one bowl for myself, so this measuring cup helps to keep me in check with portion size. This Honey Vanilla Crunch is naturally gluten free and is made from a blend of organic corn, sorghum, chickpeas and sweet potatoes.  By using crops like chickpeas and sorghum in this cereal, not only is Cascadian Farm adding great flavor and nutrition, they are also helping to keep the soil on the farms on which they are grown healthy. Both chickpeas and sorghum help farmers to maintain fruitful and nutritious soil.
Step 3) Add some protein! Sure, milk has protein, but not as much as kefir! By serving this cereal with 1 cup of Kefir, (which is a fermented milk drink, or a thin yogurt) you’re upping the protein by 10 grams. We love to pair the Oats & Honey Granola with Kefir because the natural sweetness from the honey-coated oats pairs nicely with the tart Kefir. Honey and pollinators in general are super important to Cascadian Farm. At the home farm they have set up pollinator gardens which have allowed the Home Farm to rely solely on native bees to pollinate their crops.  Plus, I learned on Cascadian Farm's Instagram account that Scientists estimate that one out of every three bites of food we eat is made possible by the work of pollinators! So support those local bees!
Step 4) Pair it with a flavored milk! To shake things up I like to serve the Cascadian Farm Dark Chocolate Almond Granola with a homemade chocolate hazelnut milk. You can find all sorts of flavored nut milks in the market right now, so no need to DIY, but feel free to get creative with different pairings. Plus, want to know a fun fact about oat crops?! They help to keep farmers' soil in place during periods of heavy rain! Who knew!

Step 5)  As we head into fall and back to school, I enjoy a hot cereal option and love to eat the Cascadian Farm Fruit and Nut Granola warm. All I do is heat it on the stove with my milk of choice until most of the liquid has been absorbed, then I top it with extra fruit and nuts.

So what are you waiting for? Go forth and conquer back to school and breakfast with Cascadian Farm’s line of organic and non-GMO cereals!
